Graduate School of Education Center for Health Achievement Neighborhoods Growth and Ethnic Studies (CHANGES) Margaret Beale Spencer |
The Center was established for designing, implementing and evaluating programs of research for promoting resiliency and psychological well-being among ethnically diverse children and youth residing in a variety of community and neighborhood situations. CHANGES promote and sustains collaborative arrangements, which range from preschool (e.g., North Philadelphia Collaboration) through the late adolescent periods (e.g., public secondary schools in urban settings). Also empirically demonstrated and explored, programmatically emphasized and addressed (i.e., as innovative collaborative arrangements) are the needs of highly vulnerable youth who reside in residential care settings in the northeast and mid-west. Basic research findings are converted into modules and delivered as training opportunities for those providing care for young people and their families. Context-linked findings are also used in collaborations with agents of public safety for the expressed purpose of diminishing disproportionate minority contact with the criminal justice system.
