What are Consortium Interest Groups?
“Interest Groups” are a primary benefit for Consortium members. The Consortium engages members through three working Interest Groups organized around the core components of its mission: research, careers, and engagement. The Interest Groups interact mainly through monthly conference calls. These groups determine their work plans according to the recommendations of their members. Primary functions are to foster collaboration; generate ideas on how the Consortium can advance its mission; and carry out activities to expand the resources of the Consortium.

See below for further details on: RESEARCH | CAREERS | ENGAGEMENT

RESEARCH
Research Interest Group meetings (by conference call) alternate between two central activities: (1) informal presentation of "works in progress" by members and (2) discussion of pragmatic research challenges of interest to Consortium members. The former offers a way for members to get to know one another and to draw on other Consortium members to provide input on our work.  The latter allows members to share their experiences, expertise, and wisdom with one another. Topics include: How do faculty members navigate the tenure process while doing policy-relevant research? How can researchers successfully engage in collaborative research with community and policy partners? How can scholars on "soft money" appointments deal with continuous fundraising and funding uncertainties? How do scholars from different fields, and from inside and outside of academia, think about causality?  Ultimately, the Consortium hopes that the connections and interchange on these calls will lead to new collaborative research by members located at different universities. Chaired by Rachel Gordon (University of Illinois at Chicago) and Anne-Marie Iselin (Duke University).

CAREERS
Careers Interest Group participants include university faculty, staff, and students who are interested in expanding their professional development opportunities. A key topic in Careers Interest Group meetings (by conference call) is how to build the Consortium website and other resources that (1) connect young scholars with seasoned mentors in their research areas and (2) help young researchers secure academic and non-academic jobs. Members think creatively about methods to leverage the Consortium’s network to support the next generation of committed child and family policy scholars and leaders for policy centers, academia, and government. Chaired by Sara Benning (University of Minnesota) and Anna D. Johnson (Georgetown University). Intern: Erin Bumgarner (Columbia University).

ENGAGEMENT
Members of the Engagement Interest Group seek to bridge the gap between academic research and policy. Meetings (by conference call) are currently held monthly and serve three primary functions. The first is a forum to discuss effective ways for researchers to communicate their work to policymakers. The second function is to advise the Consortium on ways it can use its network and website as a mechanism for delivering academic research to policymakers. Thirdly, the larger group also breaks into subgroups to strategize on how to inform policy on specific issues, such as items of interest to the National Governor’s Association and the National Conference of State Legislatures. The group asks “How can we leverage our collective expertise in child and family policy, broadly defined, to maximize the impact of our work on policy at a local, state, national, and international level?” Members share successes and lessons learned, identify best practices, and develop new ideas for using research to inform and impact policy. Chaired by Jenni Owen (Duke University) and Ray Firth (University of Pittsburg).
